New floors in Kirksville: what to expect from measure to install day
Buying new floors is easier when you know what comes next. Whether you are replacing carpet in one bedroom or putting vinyl plank through the whole first floor, the project at Kirksville Carpet One follows the same steps: pick your floor, get a price, have us measure, order, and install. Here is each step, what we need from you, and how to get your home ready.
Step 1: pick your floor
Start online or in person. Every flooring page on our site shows the styles on our Kirksville showroom floor with their material price per square foot: carpet, vinyl plank, hardwood, laminate and tile.
Then come see them. Our showroom is at 1200 N Baltimore St. Walk in Monday to Friday, 9 to 5, or call to set up a Saturday appointment. Bring a photo of the room, and if you can, a cabinet door, a throw pillow or anything else you are matching. Take a few samples home and look at them in your own light, morning and night.
Not sure which kind of floor fits the room? Our guides on vinyl plank vs laminate and how to choose carpet walk through the trade-offs.
Step 2: get your estimate
Our online flooring estimator lets you add every room, pick a floor for each one, and see your installed price and a materials-only price. It also asks what is under your floor now. We ask for your name, phone and email before showing prices, and we honor your online prices for 14 days.
Prefer to talk it through? Call (660) 956-4560 or ask in the showroom. Either way, the estimate is where you see what goes into the installed price:
- Professional installation.
- Tear-out and haul-away of your old floor, included in one installed price.
- Carpet pad, priced as its own line when you choose carpet.
- Floor prep, only if the floor underneath needs it.
12-month financing is available. Ask us about it in the showroom.
Step 3: the free in-home measure
Before your final price, we come to your home for a free professional in-home measure. This is where your online estimate becomes your final total.
We measure each room, and we check what is under your current floor. That matters because most new floors need a flat, solid base. If the floor underneath needs leveling or other prep, you find out at the measure, not on install day.
It helps to have these ready when we come:
- Which rooms are getting new floors, and where each one should start and stop.
- Where the new floor meets a floor that is staying, like tile in a bathroom or carpet on the stairs.
- Any spots that squeak, feel soft or have had water trouble.
- Doors that already drag on the floor.
Step 4: ordering
Every floor is ordered for you. It usually arrives at our showroom in about 2 weeks, and we call you when it is here. With installation, we bring your floor to your home and install it.
Because every order is made for you, we can't take returns. That is why the samples and the measure come first: you see the floor in your home and confirm your rooms before anything is ordered. See how ordering works for the details, including picking up a floor-only order at our showroom.
Step 5: get your home ready
A little prep the week before keeps install day moving.
- Clear small items, breakables and anything stored on the floor in the rooms getting new flooring. Empty closets if their floors are being done.
- Ask when you schedule how furniture and appliances will be handled, so you know what to move ahead of time.
- Unhook TVs, computers and their cords yourself.
- Plan for pets and kids to be somewhere else for the day.
- Leave a clear path from the driveway to each room.
- Keep the house at normal living temperature. Many floors are meant to be installed at the room conditions you will live with.
Step 6: install day
The installers start by taking up your old floor. Tear-out and haul-away are included, so you are not left with a pile in the driveway. Next they prepare the floor underneath, including any prep found at the measure, and then lay the new floor, fit it around doorways and cabinets, and finish the edges and transitions.
How long it takes depends on the floor and the house. Open rooms go faster than kitchens and bathrooms, where there is more cutting around cabinets and fixtures, and stairs take the most time because each step is fit by hand. Ask us when you schedule what to expect for your rooms.
Someone should be home at the start to walk the rooms with the installers, and at the end to look everything over.
Step 7: after the install
- Put felt pads under furniture legs before you move pieces back, and lift heavy items instead of dragging them.
- Ask the installers whether the floor can be walked on right away or needs time, for example for glued-down floors or grout.
- Follow the care instructions for your floor before you use any cleaner or steam mop.
